The UCSF Myocarditis Center provides comprehensive care for patients who have or are at risk of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). Myocarditis can have a variety of causes, including viral or bacterial infections, autoimmune disorders and drug reactions. Most cases are mild and resolve on their own, but sometimes myocarditis leads to a severe or even life-threatening heart condition.

Unfortunately, myocarditis isn't always simple to diagnose and there is no standardized treatment. Depending on the underlying cause and the specific symptoms, a patient may need medication, a simple procedure or surgery – or nothing at all. To address the complexities of myocarditis care, our team includes doctors from various advanced cardiovascular specialties, including heart failure, cardio-oncology and cardiac electrophysiology.

As one of the first clinics anywhere to focus on myocarditis, we also have a robust research program. We collaborate with doctors and researchers at UCSF and medical centers around the world to develop better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for myocarditis. This means our patients have access to the latest and best therapies.
